Mount drives In Debian and Ubuntu

What does it means?

When we connect to our machine a drive we are used to see it immediately and to be able to access to it as it is plugged in.

Well this concept doesn’t work on every machines. If we have a server running and more often without graphical interface, for example, this is not going to happen on it’s own.

We have to run some commands before we can read this drive.
Lets see together how to do it.

NOTE: The content of this article doesn’t apply on drives whit NTFS file system.

Project “Villa”, home automation from Tuya devices

Hello readers,

this time I want to talk with you about a project I’m following for a friend of mine. He have a villa which he recently restructured and he basically started with the electricians to implement in his house this new kind of controllers for lights and curtains.

The system is easy to configure but the problem he had was the fact that the curtain controller was not compatible with the curtains motors he installed.
Basically the controllers was meant to work with a 3 wires motors but the motors are meant to be controlled with RF remote.

What are we using?

The controller is branded Jinvoo and inside is controlled by an ENC8266 on which runs a firmware owned from Tuya.
This controller is installed in a wall-mount and is meant to control a motor through 3 wires. Through this cables he is able to tell the motor in which direction he have to spin and the controller can read the current absorption to learn and check in which position is the roll-up curtain.

Secure SSH: basics for your security

Here we are again after my last security post about disabling root account on Ubuntu / Debian. This time I will bring you how I chose to implement some security best practice with OpenSSH on some machines I run with Linux based OS like Ubuntu, but works even with other Debian based distro.

In this guide I will try to explain how to secure a machine service widely used called OpenSSH from malicious attacks. They are usually performed using some vulnerabilities of a non proper configured system leaving your server or pc available to possible hacks.

What is OpenSSH?

OpenSSH or more simply ssh (secure socket shell) is a service hosted by a machine (server or host) which allow another PC (client) to connect to its shell.

Disabling root account on Ubuntu / Debian

Here we are with this new article which is going to explain how to secure your system disabling root account on Ubuntu / Debian preventing to everybody to access to your system with such a high grade allowing to perform malicious actions or make serial damages to your environment.

We are going through different steps and maybe many of them can result redundant but you may never know which will be the next flaw being discovered exposing even partially your system.

Who is root? and why is so important?

Root user is the first user you will find by default on your machine, he is the user which has the privileges of doing everything in your system and everyone (even the system owner) who is grant the access whit that role has the complete control on all the system and our first worries is to avoid to everybody, even our self if possible, to log in as root user.
This role is very critical when it comes to security and safety and we should do our best to respect it and protect it.

Back at Home and…, PARTY!

Hello to everybody! I’m back at home and I’m still on the couch, but this time is mine! These days are really beautiful and outside people are celebrating the carnival while I’m seated having a really chill day to rehab after the party of Yesterday.

PARTY? yes, yesterday we had a house warming party here at home with friends and it came out pretty good. Food and alcool mixed with caraoke just to wake up this morning at 14:23.
I cleaned the kitchen and my wife the floor and now I’m a bit bored because I don’t know what to do, so here I’m writing on this blog again and I had spent some time to improve a bit the graphical content as you can see.

I don’t really know who you are but some fucking dude from USA tried to hack this website in the past days and doesn’t look like he made it. XD

As I said is carnival but cause of this Corona Virus many events have been cancelled and still I don’t know what will I do this Tuesday. I just hope this epidemic will be cured and the damages limited.

Well in the meanwhile I’m working on a project in a Villa of a friend of mine and I’m actually trying to write a actual good article about the works so you will be able to actually read something interesting on this v1t.it blog I have.

The first one, after Hello World!

Hello, I’m Marco and actually I’m seated on the couch of a friend of my wife in Amsterdam “enjoying” his view from the 9th floor. I spent the last days realizing which was the best solution to manage my VPS to host this blog and I’m completely out of energy cause of those open-source admin panels you may find online. I want things done in a certain way and many of you will be saying: “why opening a blog on technology if you are neither able to set up a hosting manager?” SECURITY, yes right that actually now I’m with Plesk and I’m ok. It does what it has to do and has lots of security tips and tricks for you.

But beside that I will like to have a place where to trow all my adventures and my thoughts. Still I don’t know if I will really do it or if this will be the last post you will see, I neither payed the host for a long term.

Probably if you are reading this you must have lot of time to trow away and actually this blog is running on the basic theme of wordpress without a graphic content and any idea of how it will be looking tomorrow, if there’s will be one.

As you can see looks like I’m under effect of alcool but I’m just super tired and I want sleep.
